Every year since 2015, hundreds of students from all over Austria have been competing for the Citizen Science Award from April to the end of the school year. In this way they make important contributions to scientific research. The most committed participants are awarded cash and non-cash prizes at a ceremony in the fall.

What is the Citizen Science Award about?

As part of the "Citizen Science Award" research competition, selected Citizen Science projects invite children, young people and adults to help answer scientific questions. Which species of bumblebee are common in Austria? What political participation opportunities are there? What is the water quality of Austria's rivers? In order to find answers to these and other questions, participants are asked to collect data, fill out questionnaires and much more.

Participation is worthwhile! Cash and non-cash prizes await the most committed participants, which will be awarded for the first time at a Young Science Congress in Vienna in the fall of 2022.

The Citizen Science Award is organized and coordinated by the OeAD Center for Citizen Science on behalf of the Austrian Federal Ministry for Education, Science and Research (BMBWF).

The participation phase in the Citizen Science Award 2022 is over

Pupils and all interested parties could actively participate in seven Citizen Science Award projects from various research fields on different topics from 1 April to 8 July 2022. The most committed Citizen Scientists will be honoured at a festive event in autumn.
