Become a Citizen Science Award project

Every year in the fall, researchers get the chance to submit their Citizen Science project to the Citizen Science Award. As part of the research competition, they benefit from a number of advantages! From April to the beginning of July, school classes and individuals support the projects with numerous research contributions. To honor the commitment of the citizen scientists, the most dedicated of them will be awarded cash and material prizes by the projects, the OeAD and the Austrian Ministry of Education, Science and Research at a festive ceremony.

The Citizen Science Award has been inspiring citizens across Austria for science and research since 2015. Almost 14,000 children, teenagers and adults have now participated in 35 research projects. In 2018 and 2019 alone, they supported science with around 56,000 contributions. This year, the research period for the Citizen Science Award runs again from April 1 to July 9, 2021 and invites school classes and individuals to take part in eight research projects.

What benefits does the Citizen Science Award offer to research projects?

The OeAD Center for Citizen Science organises and coordinates the entire Citizen Science Award, from the call for proposals and selection of research projects, to the public relations work surrounding the participating period, to the organisation of the award ceremony for the winners. For scientists, the research competition is an ideal opportunity to present their project to a wider public and to encourage citizen scientists to participate in research. Researchers also benefit from other advantages:

  • Know-how development through workshops as well as networking and exchange of experience with other citizen science projects
  • Extensive promotion of the award and the participating projects by the OeAD and thus reaching a wider circle of people in Austria (teachers, students, individuals)
  • Personal contact with interested teachers at teacher training courses
  • Generation of new data and research contributions
  • Organisation of a festive event for the presentation of the awards by the OeAD, which also offers a nice stage for the project
  • Financial support for cash and material prizes

Apply as a project for the Citizen Science Award 2022

The next application period will run from 1st October to 22 November 2022. Registration for the Citizen Science Award is very easy and works using a short online form. The projects will then be jointly selected by the BMBWF and OeAD for participation in the Citizen Science Award. If you have an ongoing citizen science project and offer committed citizen scientists the opportunity to participate in research between April and the end of the school year 2022, you already meet the most important requirements. The conditions of participation and the registration form will follow shortly.

Looking back over the last few years

The projects and winners have achieved a lot since 2015. In 2020, the Citizen Science Award had to be cancelled due to Covid-19. More information on the projects and winners of the last years can be found in following overviews:
