Every year in the fall, researchers get the chance to submit their Citizen Science project to the Citizen Science Award. As part of the research competition, they benefit from a number of advantages! From April to the beginning of July, school classes and individuals support the projects with numerous research contributions. To honor the commitment of the citizen scientists, the most dedicated of them will be awarded cash and material prizes by the projects, the OeAD and the Austrian Ministry of Education, Science and Research at a festive ceremony.

The Citizen Science Award has been inspiring citizens across Austria for science and research since 2015. More than 17,000 children, teenagers and adults participated in 43 research projects. In total, citizen scientists have supported research with around 145,000 contributions since 2015.

In 2022, the Citizen Science Award co-research period took place from 1 April to 8 July 2022 and invited school classes and individuals to participate in research projects.

What benefits does the Citizen Science Award offer to research projects?

The OeAD Center for Citizen Science organises and coordinates the entire Citizen Science Award, from the call for proposals and selection of research projects, to the public relations work surrounding the participating period, to the organisation of the award ceremony for the winners. For scientists, the research competition is an ideal opportunity to present their project to a wider public and to encourage citizen scientists to participate in research. Researchers also benefit from other advantages:

  • Know-how development through workshops as well as networking and exchange of experience with other citizen science projects
  • Extensive promotion of the award and the participating projects by the OeAD and thus reaching a wider circle of people in Austria (teachers, students, individuals)
  • Personal contact with interested teachers at teacher training courses
  • Generation of new data and research contributions
  • Organisation of a festive event for the presentation of the awards by the OeAD, which also offers a nice stage for the project
  • Financial support for cash and material prizes
