The ‘Sensing Justice’ project has been working intensively on the question of how data obtained using citizen science can be used as evidence in court proceedings. The research was made possible by the European Commission's Joint Research Centre.
The focus was on the area of citizen sensing, in which citizen scientists use earth observation tools to collect and analyse data. For example, changes in landscapes and bodies of water can be detected. The researchers have analysed whether and how these initiatives can be applied in environmental law procedures in Europe.
The monograph ‘Civic Monitoring for Environmental Law Enforcement’ presents the results of the analysis. The online version of the book is available free of charge as an open access publication.
