The short overview presents eleven EU projects on Citizen Science from three categories: General, Social Sciences and Humanities, and Natural Science and Technology.

Allgemein

CS Track – Investigating Citizen Science

  • Duration: December 2019 – November 2022
  • Austrian project partners: Science Shop Vienna
  • Keywords: Citizen science research, impact

The aim of CS Track is to generate more knowledge about Citizen Science and the impact of Citizen Science activities. The project will examine a range of citizen science activities, disseminate best practices and formulate knowledge-based policy recommendations to maximise the potential benefits of citizen science for individual citizens, organisations and society as a whole.

Incentive – Citizen Science Hubs

  • Duration: February 2021 – January 2024
  • Austrian project partners: none
  • Keywords: Responsible Research and Innovation, institutional establishment

The aim of the project is to demonstrate the potential of Citizen Science through the joint establishment and evaluation of Citizen Science Hubs (CSH) at four European universities: University of Twente (Netherlands), Autonomous University of Barcelona (Spain), Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Greece) and Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (Lithuania). In this way, the project will accelerate the transition of these institutions towards a more inclusive, open and democratic innovation and science policy that follows the principles of Responsible Research and Innovation. In addition, the project aims to show European and international research institutes how they can create and run their own CSHs to ensure a democratic and collaborative way of shaping, implementing and monitoring scientific progress and technological growth.

NEWSERA – #Citsci is the new #Scicomm

  • Duration: January 2020 – December 2022
  • Austrian project partners: none
  • Keywords: Science communication

The overall aim of NEWSERA is to show that Citizen Science can be used as an effective science communication tool. To this end, the complex science communication strategies of Citizen Science programmes are analysed and evaluated. The project uses a bottom-up approach. NEWSERA co-designs strategies for selected Citizen Science projects from H2020 to improve their science communication and their impact on the Quadruple Helix stakeholder groups.

Social Science and humanities

CoAct – Citizen Social Science

  • Duration: January 2020 – December 2022
  • Austrian project partners: ZSI and University Vienna
  • Keywords: Citizen social science, societal challenges

CoAct will define and develop a general framework for Citizen Social Science as participatory research. This will be co-designed and directly driven by citizens who share a social concern. Together with stakeholders, participatory research groups will explore solutions and strategies and stimulate change in four different problem areas: mental health care, youth work, environmental justice and gender equality.

COESO – Connecting Research and Society

  • Duration: January 2021 – December 2023
  • Austrian project partners: none
  • Keywords: Barriers, social sciences and humanities, financial funding

The overarching goal of COESO is to overcome the barriers that hinder the development of Citizen Science in the social sciences and humanities. The project aims to identify the needs and challenges of researchers who want to carry out Citizen Science projects in the social sciences and humanities. Through the establishment of an online platform, collaboration and communication between researchers and stakeholders will be facilitated. The project also aims to increase financial support for citizen science projects in the social sciences and humanities.

YouCount – Youth Citizen Science

  • Duration: February 2021 – January 2024
  • Austrian project partners: University Vienna and Spotteron
  • Keywords: Social inclusion, Citizen Social Science

The overarching goal of YouCount is to generate new knowledge and innovations to improve the social inclusion of young people at risk of exclusion across Europe through Youth Citizen Social Science (Y-CSS). YouCount aims to 1) generate knowledge about social inclusion and how to bring about social change through the involvement of young Citizen Scientists and 2) contribute to the scientific knowledge base for Y-CSS in order to promote its dissemination.

Natural Sciences & Technology

CitiMeasure

  • Duration: 2021 – 2023
  • Austrian project partners: none
  • Keywords: Cities, inclusion, sustainability

The CitiMeasure project aims to bring together the experience and expertise of European cities, organisations and networks in implementing citizen science initiatives. The project follows a co-creation approach to develop and test three tools to improve the comparability and interoperability of citizen science data. These will in turn help to improve digital inclusion and promote policy and/or behaviour change. The project focuses on the application of Citizen Science to create smarter, more sustainable and inclusive European cities.

Reinforce – Research Infrastructures FOR citizens in Europe

  • Duration: December 2019 – November 2022
  • Austrian project partners: ZSI
  • Keywords: Research infrastructure, physics

The project will investigate the following questions: a) Can citizens contribute to the development of new knowledge in frontier science where large research infrastructures are applied? b) Can citizens use this new knowledge to solve societal problems? c) How can citizen feedback be incorporated? In the course of innovative citizen science projects on pioneer physics research, up to 10,000 citizens should participate in the research process.

STEP CHANGE

  • Duration: March 2021 – February 2024
  • Austrian project partners: EUSEA and ZSI
  • Keywords: Impact, health, energy, environment

The project is based on the assumption that Citizen Science can play an even greater social and scientific role than is generally recognised. Especially in critical research areas (e.g. environment), where human and non-human factors are closely interwoven, Citizen Science could add great value. In the course of Step Change, therefore, five Citizen Science initiatives are being carried out in the areas of health, energy and the environment.
